MARKETING/DESIGN/CONSUMER TRENDS/INSPIRATIONS Cognac & Brandy News for Consumers & Industry Experts
For the longest time I have heard that Napa was the Bordeaux of America. Now, have you heard of Ningxia?
China is planning to open more than 1000 wineries in the next 10 years in the most famous Chinese wine making province of China (central north region), i.e., Ningxia, where the first vineyards were planted in 1982.
Ningxia currently has more than 100 wineries, producing big Chinese wine brands including Bacchus, Changyu Moser XV, Chateaux Yuanshi, Chengcheng, Helan Qingxue, Lanyi, Leirenshou, Xixia King, Yuange, and Yuhuang.
Ningxia is big on Cabernet Sauvignon, but also Merlot, Cabernet Franc and the local Gernischt grape, also called Chinese Cabernet or Cabernet G, also producing Rieslings and Chardonnays, with 58,000 acres of vines planted to date.
The issue is how can one increase wine production and at the same time improve wine quality. Ningxia is introducing a wine classification modeled on Bordeaux’s 1855 Classification with 5 level-growth rankings and a required renewal every two years.
To participate, wineries must make at least 4,166 cases of bottles over at least 13 acres of vineyards. These wineries must also comply to strict rules such as at least 75 percent of grapes used to make their wines must come from the Ningxia region and 85 percent must be of the same variety than the varietal/vintage listed on the bottle. In Bordeaux, the above rules must equate 100% but etc.
At this time the ten wineries listed above have been ranked 5th growth. And every year for the next years, hundreds of wineries will be promoted through this classification, i.e., first growth versus 4th growth, etc.
The Chinese government plans that this program will increase domestic wine consumption in favor of domestic brands, improve the safety of its wine production, and inform consumers that they have quality choices when it comes to Chinese wines.
Note that Ningxia has one of the largest concentrated Muslim population of China. Ningxia is expected to become one of the major tourism attraction of China for its wine country life style.
Many foreign investors are attracted by Ningxia’s potential including Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy that has invested 5.5 million dollars with the local Ningxia State Farm Group for the joint development of a winery to be opened this year.
